Amen to the comment about the fact that everyone should have one of these. I can't agree more. They are handy little tools!

The Sauerbiers I have are all right handed. There is a bit of an offset to the handle vs. the bar. Also the handle is a little fuller to the right side.

Scott,
To split that width and that thin on shoe leather consistantly I think a bandknife splitter would be the only reliable way to go. My first call would be to Melanie Machine in Vernon, CA. Phone number is (800) 894-9268. They are sure good people to do business with.

Hi Bruce,
Great website and your splitter page was very informative. I am interested in buying a splitter to split leather to very thin thicknesses such as used in ladies shoes (~.025"). It would need to be able to split 8-10" wide. Which type or model is best for splitting this thin? Any recommendation for a source would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,
Scott

Ron,
I would sure be interested in seeing a picture of your splitter. I don't have a source for someone routinely making blades, but I have talked to a knife maker who said it was something he could do. The price for that was higher than the value of the splitter though.
