Dec 25th – Christmas Custom Leather Gift Orders – Rope Display, Rope Bag, Day Planner,Rifle Strap, Shaving Kits, and Spur Straps
It is Christmas morning, and time for what will probably be my last post for the year here. I would like to thank the many who have posted both publicly and sent me emails privately about the posts here. We have had good discussions about tools and leatherwork, and I thank each and every one of you.
Like many custom leatherworkers, this has been a busy time of the year doing orders for custom leather Christmas gifts. I am going to include just a few examples of some of the different ones.
I usually make these as awards item for ropings and they are lettered with the event. The strap usually holds the winning rope. This customer asked for a frame cutout to put her grandfather’s picture in the center. As someone who respects the older ones who paved our way, I can sure relate to that sentiment. She had a great idea, and I was only too honored and glad to be able to carry it out for her and her family.
I make several rope bags through the year, but this one is a little different. Tyler Holzum is a good cowboy and horseman, and likes his stuff a little understated. This rope bag for his wife, Jennifer, has a roughout body. The large front pocket is open at the top to stuff a vest or sweatshirt down into, and has simple strap closures. The “turtle” is an old family brand of Jennifer’s family. The stamp pattern on the pocket and shoulder strap is a rope center block stamp.
I make a few rifle straps throughout the year. Some are full craved and fancy, and some like this one are more traditional and have the classic look of basket stamping and formal initials.
I always make quite few shaving kits for Christmas, and the rest of the year too for gift orders and personal use. I have made them with silhouettes, initials, full tooled or plain, and mixed patterns. The most popular with the western folks is to have their brand tooled on, and the classic basket stamp pattern always sets that off well.
Another popular gift and personal use order throughout the year is a dayplanner/organizer. I have done these for about as long as I have been doing leatherwork. This one has the family business on the front, and the back was tooled with the ranch brand.
These spur straps are an awards order for an upcoming barrel race. This customer opted for the black stingray for her choice of inlay.
These are just a few of the gift orders I had this year, but representative of some of what we do here. In closing, I again want to thank everyone for reading and participating in this blog. I especially want to thank my friends and customers for their orders. My special thanks for everyone who has graciously shared their knowledge, tips, praise, and critiques of my work. We wish everyone a blessed and happy New Year!
